Some instruments could only be built from metal that predates 1945

Steelmaking uses atmospheric air, so steel smelted after the first nuclear tests carries a faint signature of fallout. For decades, the most sensitive radiation detectors were built from pre-war steel — much of it cut from the German battle fleet scuttled at Scapa Flow in 1919 and still lying on the seabed.

The contaminant that mattered was cobalt-60, introduced with the air blown through the melt. Instruments that must detect very weak radioactivity — whole-body counters, low-background gamma spectrometry, some space and medical sensors — cannot tolerate a housing that is itself faintly radioactive. So the salvage divers at Scapa Flow acquired an unlikely second customer base among physicists.

Why it matters

1945 wrote a line across the material record. Everything manufactured afterwards can be dated by its own contamination, which is why the same marker is the leading candidate for the base of a proposed Anthropocene epoch. The signature is not in a distant ice core. It is in ordinary objects.

The Bessemer and open-hearth processes blow enormous volumes of ambient air through molten iron. Whatever is airborne at the moment of smelting ends up dissolved in the product. It is one of the few industrial processes that samples the entire atmosphere by design, which is exactly what makes finished steel a dated artefact of the sky it was made under.

Atmospheric testing effectively ended with the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty. Cobalt-60 has a half-life of 5.27 years, so more than eleven half-lives have passed, and modern basic-oxygen steelmaking uses near-pure oxygen rather than air. Contemporary steel is clean enough for nearly all purposes. The romance outlived the requirement.

Challenge · the strongest objection

The claim is usually stated in the present tense and has not been true for some time.

Pre-war steel remains preferred for a small number of extreme applications, but the general statement “sensitive instruments require pre-1945 steel” is a fact from the 1960s repeated as though it were current. It is a good example of a true story acquiring a false tense.
